"the lead" starts right now. >>> i'm jake tapper. this is "the lead." we're continuing cnn's breaking news coverage of the shooting at los angeles international airport at roughly 9:20 a.m. pacific time, 12:20 here on the east coast. air traffic at l.a.x., one of the biggest airports in the nation, is at a crawl this hour after a gunman opened fire in terminal three. he unleashed chaos inside. the transportation security administration confirms that one of its agents was killed in the shooting. another tsa employees were injured. police list a total of seven people wounded. it's unclear exactly how that breaks down. the gunman is believed to have acted alone according to lapd. according to police, this individual, the suspect, pulled an assault rifle out of his bag, that's the words of the police, assault rifle, and opened fire. he charged back into t
's shooting at los angeles international airport. the statement reads in part quote, at this time, we feel a larger and more consistent armed presence in screening areas would be a positive step in improving security for both tsos and the flying public. the development of a new class of tsa officers with law enforcement status would be a logical approach to accomplishing this goal, end quote. security at airports across the nation will be reviewed on orders from attorney general eric holder in the wake of the l.a.x. shooting. a gunman killed one tsa officer as you recall and wounded two other officers and a passenger. the suspect, 23-year-old paul ciancia, is still listed in critical condition at this hour. earlier, an attorney read a statement from his family in new jersey offering condolences to the victims and begging for privacy. >> paul is our son and brother. we will continue to love him and care for him. we will support him during the difficult times ahead. while we do not mean to minimize the grief and distress experienced by many other families, we hope that the public will unders
ended a short time ago at a los angeles walmart where we find kyung lah, who we hope is staying safe right now, considering that setup. what are these protesters demanding and are they behaving themselves there? >> reporter: well, it's actually just wrapped up, as you said. we have a couple stragglers still holding up signs here at the very, very tail end of this protest. still trying to make a point. the point that they are making is that they want better wages. they say they simply don't have a liveable wage, they can't afford to live at a place like new york, los angeles, and that's where we saw some of these protests that have been rolling throughout the day from the east coast to the west. there have been a number of these demonstrations, eight major ones, as you mention. we were at another one just before this one happened here in los angeles, east of los angeles in ontario, california. one of the protesters who got arrested, there were some peaceful arrests, was santa claus. ten people got arrested there. nothing other than civil disobedience. what the workers say they want is

this in the win column for the justice department or for justice in general. and he joins us now from los angeles. welcome, david. thanks for being here. and the headline of your column calls this settlement a scam. why? >> well, you know, the settlement, first of all, isn't $13 billion. the hfa announced a $4 billion settlement with jpmorgan chase to settle a lawsuit a month ago. and the justice department just, you know, stuck that in to their top line number to make it look bigger. there are various other reasons that are $7 billion is tax deductible in this settlement, which means taxpayers will essentially pay $2.75 billion of settlemen settlement, roughly. a lot of the settlement in consumer relief for homeowners, which sounds all right, but as far as a cash value to jpmorgan chase, it's things they already do or are in their financial interests is to do. so when you get right down to it, you have a $13 billion settlement, allegedly, which is really maybe a $3 billion settlement in the grand scheme of things in terms of the monetary value that jpmorgan chase will actually have to suffer. >>
